Active Sports Chemistry: Energy Metabolism, Biomechanics, and Cold Adaptation

I still vividly remember the moment. One second I was gliding down a beautiful powder-covered slope, the next my vision blurred into a hazy mess, my eyes burning with unexpected intensity. Snow blindness caught me completely unprepared. After that alarming experience, I couldn't help wondering about what physically happened to my eyes—and it sparked my curiosity about how the body responds to various extremes, whether it's the biting cold of a mountain or the intense exertion of a competitive squash match. Investigating the science behind these experiences was like discovering the inner workings of a machine I'd been using daily without understanding its mechanisms. My body constantly manages complex chemical reactions, from generating rapid energy for powerful squash shots to maintaining warmth in freezing temperatures. There's an intricate laboratory of remarkable processes unfolding within us during physical activity that most of us rarely consider. The Science of En...

Bonding Biochemistry: Human Relationships and Neurotransmitters and Hormones

I have always wondered how some bonds or friendships simply feel so deep and naturally significant and some simply don't click. Was it the comfort that I experienced on a sunny afternoon at the park with my best friend or the inexplicable distance in other relationships that made me wonder incessantly: what is really happening within us? This intrigued me enough to look deeper into human attachment biology. It seems our relationships are entirely built by a team of chemical messengers. In this blog, I'm looking forward to telling you about what I discovered about the hormones and neurotransmitters that get us connected, among other cool things that I discovered along the way. I. What Is Bonding Biochemistry? Bonding biochemistry is all about how our body employs chemical messengers—such as neurotransmitters and hormones—to influence our social lives. Think of those chemicals as tiny messages our cells pass back and forth, saying to our brain whether or not it can wind down, get...

Introducing: Beyond the Beaker

All through my childhood, I would see one thing and have thirteen questions popping up in my head about it. Why was it so? Why was it not the other way? These were my baby steps towards my growing love for science.  And now, here I am. A Grade 10 student with a deep curiosity for the science that shapes our everyday lives. Over time, I realized that science is not just about intricate formulas and dull theories, but it is the most powerful tool for understanding the world around us. Beyond a lover of chemistry, I’m also an athlete, an artist, and a curious mind who’s always exploring. Whether I'm playing squash, working on a new painting, or diving into experiments, I find science sneaking into every corner of my life. This blog series is my way of sharing those discoveries, from the surprising chemistry behind cooking to the biology behind sleep cycles and everything in between.  In this blog, "Beyond the Beaker", I will endeavor to break down complex ideas into engaging...
